Absolute or Situational Ethics??

It is hard for someone to put one absolute rule for hundreds of thousands of situations. Even the professionals themselves break the absolute rule of no digitally fixing a photo when they crop or fix scratches. I think that it depends on the situation at hand. For example, making the sweater longer for the exotic dancer so it didn't show her undergarments was ok becuase it didn't change the story, but if you were to change the length of a sweater to make someone look pregnant or something along those lines then it is wrong because a false story is being made and therefore a lie. I think that a photo can capture the truth, even if the truth is one of many. Photojournalists that edit reality are obviously liars, which is not acceptable, but photojournalists that edit merely for image reasons(like if you crop, change the lighting, or change the exposure) are ok in my book.

Photjournalism Ethics: Dove Commercial

In the commercial the company changed the complete look of the model. They lengthened her neck and made her eyes bigger and better shaped. They changed her ears also. I think that the changes that they did were very extensive but I don't think what they did was wrong. The manipulations didn't content of the picture, it was still a woman selling a product.

Under what circumstances is it worse than others?
Some circumstances are bad like putting one person's face on another person's body and making an embarrassing picture. The picture can ruin the person's reputation even if the picture was just an innocent joke.

What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?
Changes that make a person look completely different are not good. In the dove commercial the people that changed the photo changed the woman, what looked like a lot, but in the end, when her face was on the billboard, she still almost looked the same. They didn't make her look bad in any way and they didn't change the content of the picture.

Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism:
Fashion photography is about selling a product. Whether the product be makeup or clothes, you have to sell the product and you have to do whatever it takes to sell the product. In photojournalism you have to show the truth. There would be an outrage in the masses if a made up article in the newspaper showed up, and it is the same with photojournalism. You can't make up the story behind the photo. In the end the point of fashion photography is to sell a product and the point of photojournalism is to display the truth through pictures.

What relationship does each have to reality, and how does this affect the ethics of each?
In fashion photography there doesn't have to be a serious reality, but in photojournalism there has to be only the reality because that is what photojournalism is all about.

Ethicals Photos??

I don't have a problem with the change. The only change they made was to make her look better and I don't know why a change in appearance would change the subject. The fact that she is more tan doesn't change the fact that
she had lots of kids.
I don't think that this picture is ethical. The "photographer" didn't do any subtle changes, they drastically changed two photos and made a completely different picture. They insulted not only the two people in the picture but everyone who looked at the picture as well.

Ethics

The UW-Madison article was about the university photoshopping in a black person and replacing a white person's face watching a football game in order to illustrate that the university was racially diverse. I think that the university was wrong in doing what they did becuase if they wanted to show that the university was racially diverse they should of got a real picture that illustrated just how racially diverse the campus was or they should have kept the original picture. Their plan backfired when they wanted to make people happy making false shows but really they made people more upset.

Sugar Hill

Question A: Some of the skills that the photographer needed to have was the ability to be able to be patient and be able to wait for the perfect intimate or candid shot that tells a story.

Question B: The slide show was able to tell a whole entire story instead of just looking at a picture you can hear a voice walking you through the pictures and the music puts you in the mood. The song makes you feel emotional and it feel like it creates a connection between the person looking at the picture and the photographer. The map makes you feel like you are there experiencing what the people of the community everyday. The multimedia effects create a sense of reality in what you are looking at on the computer.

The most interesting multimedia effect was the interactive map. It is really cool that I can click on any building and learn about what goes on there and learn about the people that live or work in the building. The map is another way to learn more about the community and the community members.

Favorite Sports Picture

Focal Length of Lens:70-200mm
Shutter Speed:1/640
By shooting at this shutter speed Bob Rosato was able to catch the football player in mid air which created this amazing shot.
Aperture Size:f/2.8
By shooting with this size aperture he got a clear shot of the football player jumping and you don't really focus on the backround because it is blurry. The depth of field isn't very deep.

Avoiding Mergers

This picture is an example of Avoiding Mergers because the main man in the middle of the picture looks like he has a hand going into his hat becuase the man behind him is saluting as well.

Rule of Thirds

This picture is an example of the Rule of Thirds becuase all the buildings are on the 3rd line.

Balance

This picture is an example of balance. The reason the hands are balanced is becuase the shape of the hands create a right triangle which is a geometric shape.

Lines

This picture is an example of lines becuase the lines on the American Flag are going to the subject, or the bagpipe player's head.

Framing

This picture is an example of framing becuase the man is between the two columns of boxes. The boxes create a frame next to the man.

Simplicity

This image is a simple image. The man with his dog is the main thing to look at and even though there are different things in the backround they are blurred so you still focus on the man and his dog.

After Printing

The first thing that we did is that we cleaned our negatives with photoflo. We then put our negatives into the enlarger and made sure that everything was centered and in focus. We focused the picture by turning the dial on the side of the enlarger and we looked into the magnifing lens to make sure it was really in focus. We then set the time for 4 seconds so we could experiment which time was the best for the picture, that is when the test strip came in. We exposed a qaurter of the test strip for 4 secs., 5 secs., and for 6 secs. After we did that, we saw which exposure was the best time amount and then we exposed the whole paper for the time necessary. We developed the picture by putting the paper into the developer for 1 min., into the stop bath for 15 secs., and then the fixer for 2 mins. We then let the photo dry over night.

one of the problems with my negatives is I have water spots all over them. There is probably a water spot on every single one of my negatives.

One of the pictures I like is number 12, the speed limit sign and I know it doesn't show any emotion or anything but it looks really cool.

Another picture that I like is number 18, there is emotion (people are laughing) and it is candid.

There is one picture which is a picture of a T.V. screen and that is my mom's fault becuase she was looking at the camera and then she accidentally clicked the button to take a picture.

Action and Emotion

This picture shows these people happy, you can tell becuase they are smiling and laughing so it is the peak of emotion and it is candid.

The Story

From this picture I got a story about a little girl who looks sad and lonely. She looks like she doesn't have enough to eat and her family is having a tough time.

This picture fills the frame with lots of intersting stuff. The picture that is on the wall which is a picture of the picture. The people in the glass of water. He is eating with the lacross stick and there is a girl on the table that is playing hockey with the cheerios.

I like this picture becuase it has depth and I like how the shadows make things extremely dark or light. I like how I have to really stare at it to figure out what it is. I got this picture from the 2002 contest winners page.

The Differences

The differences between a pinhole camera and a SLR camera is that in a SLR camera you can control the shutter speed and in a pinhole camera you have to know how long to keep the pinhole open to light and open it manually. A SLR also has the ability to zoom in an zoom out but in a pinhole camera you can't control that.

This Picture Sucks

I don't like this picture because I don't like that it has a person in it. I don't think that pinhole pictures look nice with people in them. I also don't like it because it is blurry.

Bad Picture

I think that this picture is bad because it has too much empty space. It also doesn't show a lot of emotion and it looks like this person isn't doing anything:(.

Thursday, September 6, 2007

I really like this picture because I think that the edges, how they are black, are cool because it gives a cool affect. I like how the land looks and I like the effect that the light has on the water.

Good Picture

I think that this is a good picture because it is a candid moment. It is also good because it shows emotion and it is up close to her so there isn't a lot of dead space.
